Christie's had a record sale of $60,058,340 (HKD 468.84 million) at its Hong Kong sale of Magnificent Jewels, the auction house said Wednesday (May 28, 2008.) The auction sold 75 percent by lot.

“This was the most successful jewelry auction ever staged at Christie’s and numerous world records were achieved all across the board,” said Vickie Sek, director of the jewelry and jadeite department at Christie’s Asia. “The sale reaffirmed the appetite of private collectors who confidently bid at top levels for the finest quality gemstones, jadeite and jewelry.”

Earlier in May, Christie’s set its previous jewels record selling a total $59.25 million in Geneva. The top lot of the day in Hong Kong was a 101.27 carat F, VVS1 diamond, which sold to a private collector for $6,211,249 (HKD 48.9 million) or about $61,333 per carat.

Other diamonds included a 16.04 carat D, VVS2 circular-cut diamond, which sold to an Asian private collector for $3,341,809 (HKD 26.09 million,) or $208,342 per carat.

A square-shaped fancy green diamond weighing 10.36 carats fetched $3,485,281 (HKD 27.21 million,)  or $336,417 per carat.

Nine of the top 10 lots at the auction sold for more than $2 million, “an unprecedented achievement in the jewelry auction world,” Sek added.
